July Reads

Home » Reading » July Reads

In: Reading on: July 28, 2023

I know I’m posting this a few days before the end of the month, but since I find myself currently reading five—yes, FIVE—books (and editing another), I know nothing else will get finished in the next few days. Besides that, I have plenty of books to share with you this month that I have already finished!

My two audiobooks (both fiction):

Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan

I LOVED this book! I loved the story as well as the narrator. Patti has such a grasp of CS Lewis from her extensive research (she also wrote the novel Becoming Mrs. Lewis). She also writes a great fictional story to surround the facts of Lewis’s life and his writing of the Narnia series.

The Weight of Air by Kimberly Duffy

A good book. Definitely unique—set in early 1900s circus life. But I must confess that I felt more connection with her India-set books than this one. Just a personal preference.

Fiction:

Iris by Susan May Warren

Well she simply cannot write a bad book. This one was a race from beginning to end, as usual. And also as usual, I’m so panicked for the cast of characters I can’t wait for the next one in the series! But I have to say, I did love the hero, Hudson Bly, so much!

How Sweet It Is by Andrea Christenson

This is another Deep Haven novel, but it is the beginning of a new series set in Deep Haven. The Fox Family will be another good series if this book is any indication. So, so sweet. I love going back to Deep Haven again and again.

Appointment in Bath by Mimi Matthews

Another author that just can’t miss! Oh, how I loved this sweet, entrepreneurial, glasses-wearing hero, Ivo Beresford. A Romeo and Juliet trope that worked so very well!

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Wow, wow, wow. Intense. Heartbreaking. Hopeful. This book has been on my list for ages. My book club picked it for July and even though I couldn’t make the meeting, I’m so glad I finally read the book. This is one I will not forget. And because I read the ebook, I’ll now be on the lookout for my own physical copy too.

Wedding at Sea by Melissa Tagg

What a satisfying conclusion to the Muir Harbor series! Melissa writes such great stories with great characters. She’s another who grabs me every single time. If only we didn’t have to wait for whatever comes next! Sigh.

Theft on the Nile by Tracy Higley

This is technically a short story, but so very fun. If you’ve met Sahara Aldridge in Tracy’s other books, you’ll enjoy her cameo here. If you haven’t, it will make you want to read Sahara’s stories!

The Bookshop of Secrets by Mollie Rushmeyer

I wanted to like this book a lot more than I actually did, so I keep reading to the end. Well written, I just didn’t connect deeply with the characters. I’ll give her second book a try one of these days.

I obviously didn’t make my goal of a non-fiction this month, but I’m currently reading a research (history) book and a biography, so at least I’m working toward some non-fiction finishes!

How was your July reading? What was your favorite read this month?
