My Favorite Online Workouts

Home » Life » My Favorite Online Workouts

In: Life on: January 25, 2023

Last year I gave up the gym. And long walks outside. Why? I couldn’t sustain the motivation for them. I needed something else. Something to occupy both mind and body in a different way. For me, that comes back to some sort of walking/dancing workout. And something low impact. Even then, I get bored of too much of the same thing, so I need different styles, too.

Enter YouTube.

After much searching and trial-and-error, I settled on three workout coaches/programs I love. All of them have some things in common:

  • They are low impact workouts.
  • They are workouts to music.
  • They have workouts at different levels and lengths.
  • They have pleasing and encouraging voices.
  • The workouts are easy to do in a living room space.
  • There is always new content.

They also have some differences:

  • Some focus more on strength training than dance.
  • Some focus more on dance than strength training.
  • Two of the three have lovely-to-listen-to accents. (Australian and British)
  • Some have fewer stops for ads than others.

So today I thought I’d share with you a little about each so you can check them out if you are looking for this kind of workout!

Grow with Jo

I found Jo very earlier on in my search. A lot of her YouTube videos actually don’t have her voice overs, but they do have a preview of the next step and a ding when to move to that step. I like that because I don’t have to watch the screen the whole time to see when things change. These are very much low impact workouts—or can easily be adapted for a step or two that aren’t. These are also most definitely whole body workouts.

Jo is so enthusiastic and encouraging. In fact, this year I subscribed to her app, now that she’d doing full videos there. One reason I did so is because one of her YouTube downsides is that her videos seem to have the most stops for ads of the ones I do, whereas on her app there are no ads.

Up to the Beat with Gina B

Gina is Australian. In fact, I just learned in one of her workout videos that she used to be a professional ballroom dancer! Hers are all about incorporating dance steps with walking. I love that so much! Her accent is always fun to listen to, and like Jo, she is very motivating as she narrates the workout. She feels like a friend.

Get Fit with Rick

Rick is awesome. He lives in Dubai, but his accent is British. He is totally fun and all about helping you get fit with a low impact, at home workout. I love his encouragement and motivation, too. He makes exercising fun. And often his videos are filmed outside on the water, so a pleasant scenery as well!

I love going back and forth between these three, similar-yet-different coaching and workout styles. But there are tons of such videos on YouTube for whatever kind of workout you want at home. My suggestion is to find the ones you like and subscribe to their channels so’ll you know when they have uploaded new content.

As for me, I’m off to do a workout. But which one will it be today?

Thanks for the exercise recommendations! I’m going to try them. I also enjoy Denise Austin on YouTube – low impact, and only 8-10 minutes long if I don’t have much time that day.

Good to know! Each of these have shorter ones, too, which has been great! Something is better than nothing, right?
