The Doxology

Home » Faith » The Doxology

In: Faith on: March 26, 2020

In spite of the hopeful nature of my previous post, in general I am an anxious person. I stress over things way beyond my control. It’s something the Lord and I have been working on for many years. So when Coronavirus hit the level of closures, I had to find a way to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus over the news. Not that I’m ignoring the news. I’m paying attention to changing information. But I knew I needed to remind myself that Jesus is greater than even the coronavirus.

Then somewhere on social media I ran across this tip for washing your hands: Sing “The Doxology.” This immediately struck me as an interesting idea because “Happy Birthday” is, to me, a very boring song if it is not being sung to someone. So the next time I soaped up, I sang,

Praise God from whom all blessing flow.
Praise Him all creatures here below.
Praise Him above ye heavenly host.
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Amen.

If you aren’t familiar with the tune, here’s a good version:

Not only does this keep me washing my hands for an appropriate length of time, it means that several times I day I praise God. I remember that He gives blessing, even in a time of adversity and uncertainty. And so I’ve continued.

In truth, I hope this is a habit that sticks with me long after COVID-19 runs its course. For no matter the situation in my world or the world at large, it is a good things to remember to praise the Lord for who He is throughout each day.

Have you come up with any other practical ways of keeping your eyes on Jesus in these days of uncertainty?
