Are you a podcast listener? I confess, I go through phases. I listened a lot more before I found I could do audiobooks. But when I’m between audiobooks, I’ve found I do enjoy a good podcast, whether I’m in the car or on a plane. Even when at home doing laundry or cleaning up the kitchen! So I thought I’d share with you the podcasts I listen to most often! (I’m not linking to them because everyone has their own favorite podcasts platform, and these are widely available, including a couple of them also on YouTube!)

The Chick Report

This is my new favorite! Dr. Sandra Glahn interviews theologians about different stories in the Bible. During this inaugural season of the podcast, the focus is the women in the story and how they reveal to us the character of God not just in themselves, but in the story as a whole. It’s been fascinating! I love talking about scripture though the lenses of historical context, original language, literary devices, and what is and is not explicitly stated about the character of God. Well worth the listen!

Wise About Texas

This podcast just celebrated it’s 10th year! Crazy, because we started listening not long after it began. If you want to know about some of the obscure as well as some of the well-known events in Texas history, this one is for you! I confess, my novelist brain churns during every episode!

The History of English

Word nerds only need apply! Seriously, though. If you love history and language, I think you will find this one as fascinating as I do. I’m further behind than I would like, but every time I listen, I am awed again by the connection between history and language development that we so often forget. And so much is explained about why we have some crazy spelling rules in English—mostly because of “loan words” from other languages!

Ben Franklin’s World

Because I love American Colonial and Revolutionary War history, this has been a favorite for many years. Definitely a more scholarly history podcast, but I love that.

Stuff You Missed in History Class

Another long-time favorite! This one is more “popular” in tone (as opposed to academic in tone), and covers everything from political history to social history to history of products or movements or disciplines. Anything, really. No dry history recitations here!

You might see a glaring omission in my list: no podcasts on books!

True. Not that I wouldn’t enjoy those. I’m more afraid that my wish list of books would grow even faster than it already does! Still, every now and again I’ll find an episode of a podcast that sounds interesting, and I listen. But these on history, scripture, and language are my most consistent ones. And they all kind of overlap, which is probably why they appeal to me!

Do you listen to podcasts? What are some of your favorites?

I do have some favorite podcasts. Like you, I listen in streaks for the most part. My favorite book podcast is Middle Grade Matters. You’re right though…it is a little dangerous to listen to book podcasts!!

I love The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe (of Dirty Jobs fame if you’re familiar with that show). He does a wide range of interviews, and he is so good at interviewing. I like Clutterbug. Nature Guys is good, but it’s been a while since I’ve listened. I also have listened to The Stuff You Missed in History Class, but again, it’s been awhile.

I might have to add the Ben Franklin one to my podcast library. That sounds really good.

I’ll have to check out some of those, Becky! I always love good recommendations!

Can she trust the God of creation to make something beautiful of her life?”
