Catching up on May & June Reading

Home » Reading » Catching up on May & June Reading

In: Reading, Uncategorized on: June 22, 2015

Whew! May was a whirlwind until vacation. Then we ramped up a bit into the first of June as well. Things are finally starting to settle. In the mean time, I’ve been reading. And reading. And reading. Here are some I’ve finished that you might enjoy.

Emma: A Modern Retelling by Alexander McCall Smith

I’ll admit that even though I adore Alexander McCall Smith, I love Jane Austen’s Emma. So I went into this book with a good amount of fear and trepidation. By the first few pages, I knew I needn’t worry. McCall Smith does a fabulous job at staying true to Jane Austen’s original story and characters. How? By creating backstories for the major players that give them a plausible reason to act in their Jane Austen manner in the 21st century. Absolutely genius! And of course being able to write humorously in his own right, he completely captures the humor of the original Emma as well.

A Table by the Window by Hillary Manton Lodge

This is one of those that I’d heard great things about but just didn’t get to it earlier. I guess that’s a good thing, because when I got to the end I realized there was so much more to this story–that would be told in the next book! Which means at least the next book–Reservations for Two—is already out! Now to find the time to read it!

The Stolen Crown by Susan Higginbotham

This is another that has been languishing in my to read pile. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I enjoyed every minute of it. It imagines out the story of the Duke of Buckingham and Katherine Woodville (the queen’s sister) amidst the intrigue of an England complicated by Lancasters and Yorks.

The Secret of Pembrooke Park by Julie Klassen

Six months is an almost unforgivable amount of time to wait to read Julie Klassen’s newest release! But I finally got to it and she did not disappoint. Loved the mystery as well as the gothic feel of the story. Well done, as usual.

I’m in the middle of two great books right now. And a few I read deserve their own posts, so look for those in the next few weeks. And of course there are always more that I don’t have time to post about, but I usually add anything worthwhile to my Goodreads shelf or my Another Good Read pinterest board.

Happy summer reading!
