Portrait of a Reader: Amy D.

Welcome, Amy! Please start by introducing us to yourself and your family.

I’m married to Troy. We have 2 girls, Audrey (5) and Alaina (4). We live in San Antonio. I take care of my family and coordinate the Women’s Ministry at my church. I love to read, cook and garden….and camp.

Sounds like a lovely life.  So when you first came to identify yourself as a reader, Amy? Do you consider yourself a casual reader, a sporadic reader, a serious reader or an all-out bibliophile?

I would consider myself a serious reader. I didn’t really start reading until after grad school. I guess I got all the “forced reading” out of the way and then started reading for myself. Since I started, though, I haven’t stopped. I’m always reading something.

I hear that a lot. My theory is you get used to reading in all those college level classes and when you get out, you keep reading! 🙂 What do you most enjoy reading?

I most enjoy historical Christian fiction. My favorite authors are Randy Alcorn, Laura Frantz, Jody Hedlund and Liz Curtis Higgs. I have really enjoyed some Ted Dekker. But my all time favorites have come from Randy Alcorn.

Ah, some great authors in that list, some of whom I feel privileged to call friends. I still have not read a Randy Alcorn book. I know I need to remedy that! What is the last book you finished and what are you currently reading?

The last book I read was Harvest of Gold by Tessa Afshar.

I am currently reading Angels Watching Over Me by Michael Phillips

My next book is going to be Divergent.

I’ve heard great things about Tessa Afshar’s books–and I’ve long loved Michael Phillips, though I haven’t read that one yet. I’m sure I’ll get to Divergent one of these days. Maybe after I finally read The Hunger Games. 🙂 Do you have a favorite time and place to read? 

My favorite time and place to read are in bed at night after the kids are asleep and the house is quiet….other than on the beach!

The beach! Reading on the beach is my favorite part of being there!   So what is the most unusual circumstance/place in which you’ve been found reading?

The most unusual circumstance/place in which I’ve been found reading? How about reading quite often on the Boston subway? Or on a plane to Istanbul.

I love watching people read on subways in big cities! It always makes me wish I lived in such a place and had a commute so I could be one of them! Do you read physical books, ebooks, or both?

I mostly read ebooks now but love hard back books also. I love finding what I want on ebook from the library.

Do you buy your books, borrow them from friends or check them out of the library? (Or all of the above!)

I buy some ebooks when I can’t help myself, but I usually use the library and share with friends.

Good for you! I don’t have that much self-control! 🙂 Do you have any favorite foods or drinks that generally accompany your reading?

A good cup of coffee or glass of iced tea is perfect with a book.

Exactly! Finally, it’s true confessions time: have you ever forgotten something important (to fix dinner or that dinner was in the oven or an appointment, etc) because you were lost in the pages of a book? 

Have I ever forgotten something important because I was lost in the pages of a book? Does being late to get my kindergartener from school count? I’ve done that once or twice.

Absolutely! But the real question is: did you tell the teacher why you were late or fudge a little?
