It’s hard to believe it’s now been almost two weeks since I took a trip to visit my daughter in New England! We had such a fun fall weekend that I wanted to share it with you! (I have to experience fall in other areas of the country because we don’t get much of it in Texas. And when we do, it isn’t until November!)

I arrived in Boston on a Friday afternoon. That evening, we had dinner off of Beacon Street, in the city, then walked over to a theatre built to 1900 to watch the musical Operation Mincement. My daughter had been raving about this based-on-a-true-story World War II musical comedy. And she did not oversell it! Five actors played 80 roles!

The next morning, after the lovely pumpkin scones she made us, we drove a couple of hours southwest to the town of Mystic, Connecticut. What a charming place! First, we visited the Denison Homestead, granted in the 1654, the current house constructed in 1717, and the family having lived there until the 1940s! Now it is a museum. Our docent was fabulous—and we were the only two people on the tour, which was awesome! I got to ask all my nerdy history questions!

We stayed at The Whaler’s Inn right by the drawbridge along the main road in Mystic. The old drawbridge, built in 1922, still opens every hour during daylight, except in the winter. Looking out over water with the trees full of yellow and orange leaves was lovely, too.

From our hotel, we walked to the shops and restaurants and even the Mystic Seaport Museum and Village. All of it was charming. And did I mention the weather? Sunny, with the highs in the mid-60s. Absolutely perfect!

We learned interesting things about the whaling industry and shipbuilding at the Mystic Seaport Museum. And we drove about 10 minutes away to wander the shops in the Old Mystick Village area.

As usual with places my daughter picks to go, the food was fantastic! The Shipwright’s Daughter, which was at our hotel, was superb. We also had a yummy breakfast at Popover. And ice cream for lunch one day at Drawbridge Ice Cream. So good. And we also get our steps in!
On our way back to Boston that Monday morning, we stopped at an orchard shop to get hot cider and apple cider dounts.

I would absolutely recommend Mystic, especially in the fall. It was lovely, with enough to do for a couple of days but also enough down time for us to sit and read in the evenings. I hope to take my husband there at some point. He would love it, too.
It was a needed weekend break for both my daughter and me. And I so enjoy when we get to spend some time together, just the two of us.
What has been your favorite fall experience this year?
