This Sunday begins the celebration of Advent. While I don’t go to a church that specifically celebrates Advent, I do enjoy picking an Advent devotional each year to keep me focused on Christ at Christmas.
This year I’m using a pamphlet that my mom got for me from the Christian History Institute. It’s called The Grand Miracle: Daily Reflections for the season of Advent and it is baed on the writings of classic theologians like C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, Dorothy Sayers and more.
To say I’m excited to get started is an understatement!
Last year, I thoroughly enjoyed Paul David Tripp’s Come Let Us Adore HIm.
The year before that, the church we were attending in Austin did an Advent devotional that I downloaded.
If you haven’t done this before, I encourage you to give it a try. Search Google or Amazon for Advent devotional. Maybe your church has one you can download. Or there are a ton of Advent devotionals to choose from in the Bible app!
Whatever route you go, reading an Advent devotional is a good way to focus on—as cliche as it is—the Reason for the Season. Because the truth is that the story of Christ’s incarnation should always inspire wonder, always lead us to worship. And in our culture, the birth of Christ is the last thing we hear about during the Christmas season.
If you’ve read an Advent devotional that you recommend, put it in the comments!
